The Sincerest Compliment: Jude Law

This is Jude Law at the opening of the London Film Festival, looking awfully dapper in that hat. He has taken a plain wool suit, with a snappy navy and white trim pocket square but given the look it’s own identity by adding the hat. Although hats like Jude’s

a)take a lot of balls to wear

b)are quite expensive and if you wear them more than three times, everyone remembers and

c) require a lot of care and attention to cleaning, they are obviously statement makers.

However, we at Ed Williams can’t deny how impressive the hat makes the rest of the look.

Think about your basic suits and upping the anti with simple accessories

  • Hats
  • Pocket squares
  • Tie clips
  • Scarves
  • Briefcases and messenger bags

You know it’s coming: Stampede Jeans

Give me a break – you’re not going to be jumping in the saddle this July. Why not just buy a fresh pair of jeans that looks good, fits right and will hold it’s own during the wildest ten days of the year?

For the past few years, we’ve seen jeans with lots of embellishments, rips and fading. This year, the style has gone back to basics with a classic cut and fit.

You know it’s coming: Stampede Shirts

Is it not always right around the corner? Well, now it literally is. The Calgary Stampede is officially 16 days away and so lucky you, you still have some time to get some fresh snap button shirts to spill beer all over yourself for ten days.

Stampede wear for men doesn’t’ seem all that tricky – and the truth is, it shouldn’t be. The average Calgarian who Stampedes 5 – 6 times during the ten days should have at least three shirts that be thrown in the wash and hung to dry. You want to try to start with something that isn’t already stained from last year, too.

Think light weight shirts that are good for summer, with loose sleeves that can be rolled up to or over the elbow. You also want to look for patterns that hide spills, dust and sweat because it’s mucky in the infield.

Don’t only opt for plaids and checks. Paisley’s are a big pattern this season, whether it is be for the rodeo boys or the beer tub kings. Thing about patterns and fits that you could wear any weekend of the year, if you really wanted.

Cole Haan: Boots Galore

On our recent buying trip to Toronto this January, we met with our Cole Haan reps and became honorary hipsters for the day.

Why do we like to carry  Cole Haan shoes? Many of them come with Nike Air soles for extra comfort on those long days antiquing with your wife. The detailing on the top half shows a split in the leather, where an extra piece gives added texture to boot *nice pun*. The stylish detailing is everywhere from the pattern on the bottom of the boot, the off-colour laces and the stitching in the break in the leather. Great boots to keep your feet dry when we move from Fall to Winter.

Looking for something to wear after you’ve talked your way out of antiquing? How about these leather slippers with a smart Cole Haan crest. You can be the Hugh Hefner of your neighbourhood.

Week 2 of our Sale continues...

January sales are always adventurous. You get all types of customers, because no matter what type of customer you are, you will always appreciate a great deal.

And yes - we get it. You have shopping fatigue from December. And yes, we get it - it's freezing outside. But we know that you spent all of December having dinner with your in-laws, nearly going arse over tea kettle falling off the roof putting up Christmas lights and suffering from one too many office holiday party hangovers, we figured you might welcome a reason to get out the house, have a double americano on us and maybe do something for yourself.

And it's not like this is yet another big screen TV - your wife will be pleasantly surprised that you stopped by.

Warm up with some of our winter outerwear

That title is literal – our semi-annual sale has almost all of our stock and brand names on sale. Why in January? To make room for our new spring stock, obviously. We do this twice a year (hence the “semi-annual”) so it’s now or July to get the best prices on the best stuff.

Here is a quick re-cap of what’s on sale.

  • Made to measure suits, sports coats and pants from Coppley and Samuelson are 20% off
  • Bellstaff jackets are 20% – 50% off
  • 7 Jeans are discounted (price varies)
  • Cole Haan and Johnston & Murphy shoes are on sale and reduced to clear
  • 70% – 80% off select ties and shirts from Ted Baker, Kolte, Lipsin, Omega.

Sale runs until the end of January, but to get the good stuff, come in as soon as possible.
